“The Future Starts Now”: Economic Space for First Nations

Economic prosperity and self-sufficiency represent a longterm and as yet unfulfilled goal for Canada’s Aboriginal peoples. A new blueprint for addressing this challenge was just released, coauthored by Nathan Elliott (a former member of the Institute’s UAPS Calgary project team) and Professor David Smith.

The report’s title “The Future Starts Now;” focuses on reserve-based First Nations and their economic space. While not a new concept – think of classical economics – when it comes to First Nations in Canada, economic space is a new approach. The premise of the report is that in 2012 First Nations are in a position to take control of their economies.
